Tim Langdell, known for his aggressive trademark claims, has resurfaced by filing a federal complaint against Mobigame, the developer of the iOS game EDGE. This complaint follows Mobigame’s earlier removal of the game from the App Store in 2009 due to Langdell’s threats. The game’s title was eventually reinstated after the revocation of the “Edge” trademark due to a lawsuit involving Electronic Arts.
David Papazian, Mobigame’s CEO, stated that Langdell’s current allegations revolve around the use of “EDGE GAMES” in U.S. transactions dating back to 2003, but he argues that the evidence presented, a Java mobile version from that time, does not prove U.S. trademark use, given the competitive landscape of mobile game platforms.
With Mobigame’s recent success from its game Zombie Tsunami, Papazian expressed that they are prepared to actively combat Langdell’s claims, seeking full compensation and intending to make this case public to highlight the issues surrounding trademark trolling in the gaming industry. He emphasizes their determination to reveal Langdell’s practices, citing that their 500 million downloads give them substantial resources to fight back.
Langdell has historically intimidated companies into compliance, compelling them to alter product names. His past actions have led to significant trademark licenses and acquisitions by companies like Future Publishing and Namco.
