At the Barcelona Grand Prix, F1 drivers are experiencing significant tire degradation, with track temperatures reaching 52 degrees Celsius, leading to concerns about a “degradation fest” during the race. Haas driver Olly Bearman described the situation as a nightmare due to overheating tires, which were referred to as “giant balloons” because of higher pressures set by Pirelli for the new car generation.
Pirelli analyzed Friday’s practice sessions and reduced the minimum starting tire pressures by 1 psi to help drivers maintain better grip. The situation complicates qualifying, as tires are expected to behave as “single-lap tires,” making recovery after mistakes difficult.
Drivers compared this year’s grip levels unfavorably to previous seasons, predicting a high level of tire degradation during the race. Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg noted the irreversible tire deterioration, anticipating significant thermal degradation on both front and rear tires.
Despite Pirelli’s intention to provide three consistent tire compounds (C2, C3, and C4), results showed little difference among them. A two-stop strategy is deemed most likely, though a three-stop race could occur due to the high degradation. Teams might adopt different strategies, potentially leading to early pit stops and intense on-track battles as drivers react to tire performance.
