Alex Murdaugh’s legal team has announced new evidence for his retrial aimed at proving his innocence in the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. This includes a significant DNA discovery: male DNA found under Maggie’s fingernails that does not belong to Alex or any family member, which was never entered into law enforcement databases.
Murdaugh was previously convicted of their murders and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences. The case centers around their deaths on June 7, 2021, with evidence suggesting investigators focused solely on Murdaugh while ignoring other leads, such as tire tracks at the crime scene.
His defense attorney, Jim Griffin, argues the state lacked evidence that Murdaugh was present during the murders. He criticized the time of death estimation and pointed out inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case, emphasizing that Murdaugh’s fabrications stemmed from drug-related paranoia, rather than a motive to kill his family.
Prosecutors argue Murdaugh killed them to mask financial crimes and prevent exposure from a related lawsuit. However, the defense claims there’s no forensic evidence linking him to the scene. Despite the overturning of his murder conviction, Murdaugh remains incarcerated for separate financial crimes, serving a 40-year federal sentence and a 27-year state sentence. South Carolina’s Attorney General plans to re-prosecute Murdaugh based on existing evidence.
