Erin Patterson, a 50-year-old Australian woman, was recently convicted of murdering her estranged husband’s family by serving them toxic death cap mushrooms during a meal. Last month, she was found guilty of three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder after the meal led to severe gastrointestinal symptoms, resulting in three deaths from liver failure.
During the trial, evidence was revealed suggesting Patterson’s estranged husband, Simon, believed she had poisoned him multiple times before the fatal lunch. He detailed past incidents where he fell ill after consuming meals prepared by Erin, leading to hospitalizations and surgeries. Despite signs of poisoning, doctors could not pinpoint the cause.
Testimonies indicated that Simon, who separated from Erin in 2015, had warned family members about his suspicions regarding her cooking. His father and other relatives attended the fatal lunch where the illnesses occurred.
Erin maintains her innocence, claiming she never intended to harm her husband’s family. She faces a maximum of 25 years for the murder charges and plans to appeal her conviction. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled where victim impact statements will be presented.
