Las Vegas police released new information about Shane Tamura, 27, who killed four people before taking his own life last September. Tamura had a troubled mental health history, including issues related to concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), despite not playing professional football.
On September 12, 2022, his mother warned a 911 dispatcher about his suicidal thoughts and unstable behavior, expressing concern for his well-being and his access to a firearm. She reported that he was experiencing severe mental distress, including depression and insomnia.
Tamura worked in surveillance at the Horseshoe Las Vegas and recently traveled to New York, where he purchased a rifle used in the attack. Investigators found psychiatric medications, as well as ammunition, in his apartment. Records show that normally confidential information was released due to the extraordinary circumstances of the case. Although he had mental health issues, he legally purchased firearms, as laws allowing for confiscation during mental crises only recently came into effect.
In previous encounters with law enforcement, Tamura faced issues like trespassing and driving an unregistered vehicle. The police are currently reviewing more details related to his mental health history and the incident.
