Authorities have confirmed that one of two renana bullets involved in a fatal explosion at a Santa Monica Townhome complex is missing. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is investigating the incident, which killed three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detectives. A thorough search was conducted, but the second bullet remains unaccounted for.
The explosion occurred on July 18th while technicians were handling an explosive device found in an underground parking garage. Investigators are examining the type of military ordnance used and the origins of the devices, alongside the movements of the missing bullet.
Despite initial assessments indicating the explosives were inert, the department seeks an independent review of its explosive disposal practices and plans to work closely with the ATF on future protocols. Meanwhile, they urged the community to report any suspicious items and emphasized there is no ongoing threat to residents. The final analysis from the ATF is expected in about 45 days, with psychological support provided to those affected by the incident.
