The Boulder County District Attorney’s Office has charged 45-year-old Egyptian national Mohamed Sabri Soliman with 118 counts, including attempted first-degree murder, assault, and animal cruelty, following a fire at Pearl Street Mall that injured 15 people. If convicted, the attempted murder charges could lead to 48 years in prison. Authorities reported that Soliman used a makeshift flamethrower and targeted a group he deemed a “Zionist” organization during a weekly run event.
District Attorney Michael Dougherty emphasized the commitment to fully charging Soliman and exploring potential charges against those with knowledge of the incident. Public Defender Kathryn Herold is representing Soliman, who has a preliminary hearing set for July 15.
Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfern noted the quick response of paramedics at the scene and indicated that the investigation is ongoing, encouraging any additional witnesses or victims to come forward. The victims ranged from ages 25 to 88, including eight women and seven men, as well as one injured dog. Although there has been one federal hate crime charge filed, it’s anticipated that more may follow. Authorities are working closely with various agencies to ensure community safety, particularly as the area prepares for upcoming events.
