Defense Secretary John Healy stated that UK defense spending is expected to rise to 3% of GDP by 2034, following Prime Minister Kiel’s plan to increase it to 2.5% by April 2027. There is strong government confidence that these targets will be met, as they align with the upcoming strategic defense review, outlining military and security spending priorities for the next few years.
The review will emphasize the necessity to adapt to emerging threats, such as drones and artificial intelligence, and it will recommend deploying digital experts alongside traditional military forces. It outlines immediate threats from Russia, classifies China as a complex challenge, and describes Iran and North Korea as regional destabilizers.
OBR, the government’s budget watchdog, estimates that achieving the 3% spending target will require an additional £17.3 billion by 2029-30. Healy expressed confidence in meeting these targets, which will facilitate long-term planning amidst pressures from other governmental negotiations on budget allocations.
Additionally, the Ministry of Defense announced over £1.5 billion in funding for military housing improvements, addressing urgent repairs and renovations needed for service family homes. The Liberal Democrats have welcomed the funding but are urging the government to enhance accommodation standards to meet minimum conditions for social housing.
