Microsoft is aiming to eliminate passwords entirely for over a billion users, declaring that "Password ERA has ended" amid rising cybersecurity threats. Due to millions of stolen credentials, the company will make significant changes to its Microsoft Authenticator app, starting in August 2025. Specifically, stored passwords will no longer be accessible, and users must transition to using Microsoft Edge for password management.
Key deadlines include:
- June 2025: No new passwords can be stored with Authenticators.
- July 2025: Autofill will be disabled in Authenticators.
- August 2025: Saved passwords will be permanently deleted.
Microsoft encourages users to adopt Passkeys, an advanced authentication method, to enhance security. The shift aims to mitigate vulnerabilities associated with traditional passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA), as cyberattacks increasingly target these systems.
Additionally, new phishing attacks exploiting Google Apps Scripts are on the rise. Users are warned to be cautious of fraudulent login attempts mirroring legitimate Microsoft interfaces.
