Construction executives, builders, and engineers turned themselves in to police in Bangkok related to a building collapse that killed 92 people during a March 28 earthquake. Notably, 17 individuals, including the president of Italy Thailand Development Co., and a Chinese executive, Zhang Chuanling, were involved. They officially denied charges, with some having previously denied allegations in media reports.
Authorities indicated that the building, intended as a new auditing bureau, did not meet construction standards and exhibited structural defects. Thai media have reported on potential fraudulent activities associated with the project, including irregular documentation and issues involving a Chinese joint venture.
The Crown Court had issued arrest warrants for negligence, and all 15 individuals who surrendered were taken into custody with bail requests denied. The earthquake, centered in Myanmar, resulted in extensive destruction and over 3,700 deaths there, complicating ongoing victim recovery efforts despite search operations having halted. This incident adds to Premchai’s legal troubles, as he previously served time for wildlife violations.
