eBay Inc. has agreed to pay nearly $50 million to former employees David and Ina Steiner after they alleged a campaign of harassment aimed at silencing their reporting on the company. The settlement includes $48.7 million in damages, comprising $46.15 million from eBay and contributions from former executives, along with $7 million earmarked for charitable organizations supporting First Amendment rights. The couple reported receiving threatening deliveries, such as live insects and even a bloody pig mask, as part of a broader harassment campaign by eBay employees.
The case, which began with a lawsuit filed in 2021, revealed systematic bullying that escalated from social media threats to disturbing deliveries. eBay acknowledged the actions of its employees were wrong and not reflective of the company’s values, promising reforms in leadership and corporate policies.
David and Ina Steiner, founders of EcommerceBytes, expressed hope that the resolution might deter future corporate misconduct. Their attorney remarked that the lack of confidentiality clauses in the settlement allows them to shed light on the situation. The resolution aims to protect journalists and uphold accountability in corporate practices.
