Early Monday, Russia launched a significant missile and drone strike on Ukraine, killing at least 18 people, with the capital Kyiv facing the brunt of the attack. All ballistic missiles hit their targets, underscoring Ukraine’s urgent need for more Patriot interceptor missiles, which President Zelenskiy will highlight at the NATO summit in Ankara this week.
In recent days, a similar assault had already claimed 31 lives in Kyiv, marking one of the highest death tolls this year. Russia claims these strikes are in retaliation for Ukraine’s long-range attacks amidst fuel shortages in Russia.
Analysts note that while Ukraine’s military performs well against drones, it struggles with missile defense due to limited interceptor supplies. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that all 29 ballistic missiles launched by Russia successfully struck targets, exacerbating the nation’s vulnerability. Zelenskiy criticized the international community for not supplying enough interceptors and urged stronger commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defenses.
The strikes caused significant destruction, particularly in residential areas of Kyiv. Eyewitness accounts revealed harrowing escapes and horrifying scenes of destruction and casualties. Meanwhile, in an exchange of hostilities, Ukrainian forces reportedly attacked energy infrastructure in Russian-occupied Crimea, causing temporary power outages.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense also claimed to have intercepted numerous Ukrainian drones in retaliation. Despite mounting casualties and infrastructure damage, the conflict continues with both sides engaged in aggressive military strategies.
