A significant heatwave is forecast to hit the central and eastern United States, with temperatures potentially reaching 105°F (40.5°C), raising concerns about health impacts, especially for vulnerable populations. This situation is straining the power grid, causing electricity prices to spike dramatically—over 243% in New England and 101% in New York City, as demand for air conditioning surges. New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani advised residents to conserve energy and stay indoors during peak heat.

Travel disruptions are also anticipated, with Amtrak operating at reduced speeds and New Jersey Transit facing potential delays due to heat-related equipment issues. Airlines like Delta are waiving change fees for flights affected by the heat. This heatwave aligns with warnings from scientists about climate change exacerbating extreme weather events.
