Ukraine launched a significant drone attack on St. Petersburg and nearby areas, targeting the city’s oil terminals and port infrastructure. St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov reported a “massive” drone strike on an oil terminal, but confirmed there were no casualties and clean-up operations were underway. In the Leningrad region, Governor Alexander Drozdenko noted that a drone crashed in the Vysotsk port area, which handles critical commodities. He stated that 72 drones were shot down in the region, causing minor damage to some settlements.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy characterized the attack as part of ongoing “long-range sanctions” against Russia, aimed at its war revenue sources, and highlighted the attack’s reach, mentioning targets over 850 kilometers from Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin downplayed the drone strikes on energy facilities, calling them “not serious.” Ukraine has intensified its strikes against Russian energy infrastructure this year, leading to significant damage and fuel shortages.
In other regions, drone attacks resulted in casualties, with reports of fatalities and injuries in the Bryansk and Crimea regions. The governor of Pskov also reported shooting down over 30 drones overnight, with minor damage in Velikiye Luki.
Zelenskiy refuted Russian claims that the eastern city of Kostiantynivka had fallen to Moscow, describing them as falsehoods meant to create misleading narratives. Ukraine’s military reiterated that they still control Kostiantynivka, strategically important for defense in the Donetsk region. The Russian Ministry of Defense, meanwhile, claimed to have captured several villages in eastern Ukraine.
