On July 3, a man sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries in a shark attack at Jones Beach State Park on Long Island. The incident occurred around noon, prompting lifeguards to clear the water for an hour while authorities searched for sharks. Witnesses reported seeing the victim with significant leg injuries before he was treated by lifeguards and taken to Nassau University Medical Center.
At the time, approximately 100,000 people were at Nassau County beaches. The man’s wounds were believed to be possibly from shark teeth. Following the incident and a one-hour search yielding no further dangers, swimming was permitted again but restricted to waist-deep water.
This attack came after several recent shark sightings near New York City’s beaches, which had led to temporary closures. A larger shark, estimated at 8-9 feet, was noted just a day prior at Point Lookout. Authorities have stated the incident is under investigation.
