A significant anomaly in the North Atlantic Ocean, south of Greenland, reveals a cooling trend contrary to global warming. Researchers analyzed satellite and oceanographic data since 1955, identifying a "cold blob" linked to the weakening Atlantic Meridional Circulation (AMOC). This research supports the theory that decreased ocean currents reduce heat flow to the region rather than increased heat loss from the surface.
The study indicates that the AMOC is approaching a critical tipping point, which could result in severe global consequences, including harsher winter conditions in Europe and altered weather patterns worldwide. The observed cooling trend is attributed to a decline in deep ocean currents, reinforcing the connection between the cold mass and the weakening AMOC.
While evidence suggests that the AMOC’s slowdown is significant, its long-term trajectory remains uncertain due to limited direct monitoring since 2004. Future predictions based on climate models indicate that this tipping point might be reached by mid-century, highlighting an urgent need for policy action to mitigate potential impacts. The findings were published in Geophysical Research Letters.
