Liverpool have officially started negotiations to appoint Andoni Iraola as their new head coach, with talks led by sporting director Richard Hughes. Iraola, formerly of Bournemouth, emerged as the top candidate following the dismissal of Arne Slott last Saturday. At 43, he is eager to take on the challenge at Anfield, aligning with the club’s desire for a more attacking and urgent football style.
Iraola’s successful tenure at Bournemouth saw the team improve from 12th to 6th place in the Premier League, culminating in a historic Europa League qualification. Hughes, who appointed Iraola at Bournemouth last summer, is familiar with his coaching methods.
While there are rumors regarding adding former Liverpool players like James Milner and Thiago to the coaching staff, the club has not approached them yet. Discussions with Iraola will also focus on his preferred staff, including Tommy Elphick from Bournemouth.
If confirmed, Iraola’s first match in charge will be a friendly against AS Monaco on August 9, followed by another against Serie A side Como on August 16. His coaching style emphasizes high-intensity, front-foot pressing and quick transitions, transforming Bournemouth from a passive to an aggressive team, which improved their performance significantly over his tenure.
