A South Carolina jury acquitted convenience store owner Chikei Rick Chow, 61, of murder in the 2023 shooting death of 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton. Chow, who claimed he shot Carmack-Belton to protect his son after the boy allegedly pointed a gun at him, chased the teenager out of his store before the incident occurred. Prosecutors argued that Chow overreacted, believing Carmack-Belton had stolen water bottles and said the gun fell during the chase, rendering the threat nonexistent.
Emotions ran high during the verdict announcement, with Carmack-Belton’s family expressing their grief. The case sparked significant unrest in the African American community of Richland County, prompting protests and vigils. Previous incidents involving Chow included another shooting in what was deemed self-defense. The case highlighted ongoing tensions surrounding race, justice, and the use of force in the community.
