In Vientiane, Laos, rescue teams are investigating a potential “knock reaction” from two men believed to be trapped in flooded caves for days after a rescue operation for a group seeking gold. While one man has been saved and four others crawled to safety, rescuers are cautiously optimistic about sounds indicating possible signs of life from the trapped individuals. These sounds were detected 70 meters into a newly discovered vertical shaft that could provide safe entry into the cave.
The ordeal began on May 20 when heavy rains blocked the exit for the eight men. With the help of experts globally, five men were rescued over the weekend, while efforts continue for the remaining two. Rescuers are focusing on a vertical shaft leading into a dark room, which may connect to an air pocket further inside. Conditions at the cave entrance remain critical due to flash flooding, and efforts to drain water and prevent further flooding are ongoing.
The five survivors managed to sustain themselves before being rescued and are now recovering in the hospital.
