Plans are in motion to create the world’s first “floating city,” capable of accommodating 80,000 people. This ambitious project, spearheaded by Freedom Cruise Lines CEO Roger Gooch, is set to be powered by nuclear energy and is estimated to cost around $16.16 billion.
The proposed vessel, which would surpass the largest cruise ships, aims to function as a permanent mobile city rather than a traditional cruise experience. It would feature a range of urban amenities, including homes for 50,000 residents, accommodations for 10,000 tourists, a 15,000-seat sports stadium, parks, shopping areas, schools, and even an aquarium.
Designed to be visually appealing, the ship will also incorporate green spaces and a futuristic tram system for transportation. While the Freedom Ship idea has existed since the 1990s, it has recently regained attention, although funding remains a significant hurdle.
If realized, the ship would operate in international waters, with residents potentially moving in during construction, which could take up to four years to complete.
