Walt Disney World has announced a significant update to the Carousel of Progress attraction at Magic Kingdom, set to debut in 2027. The classic attraction, known for its portrayal of family life across different decades, will replace its existing scenarios from the early 1900s, 1920s, and 1940s with new depictions from the 1960s, 1980s, and the Y2K era. The updated fourth act will represent a “possible future.”
The animatronic family, led by John and Sarah, including Uncle Orville and Rover the dog, will remain in the attraction, along with the famous Sherman brothers’ song “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow.” The current version will operate until July 5th, with a new version showcasing future life outside Earth.
The Carousel of Progress originally debuted at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and has undergone several changes since moving to Disneyland and then to Disney World. The last update was in 1994, and while some have called for modernization, others are concerned about losing connections to Walt Disney’s legacy.
Disney is emphasizing creative excitement behind the update, with planned use of practical effects and retro-futuristic concepts. Recent upgrades to other attractions suggest a trend toward refreshing experiences while maintaining original charm.
