Michigan State University Police arrested 31-year-old Xin Tong on suspicion of operating a meth lab in Wells Hall. He faces charges including malicious destruction of property over $20,000 and maintaining a methamphetamine lab. Tong was arraigned and is being held on a $500,000 bond.
The arrest followed reports of property damage linked to suspected criminal activity in the building. Police discovered Tong with potentially hazardous substances like sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid, prompting a comprehensive search of Wells Hall. Testing confirmed the environment was safe, but the building remains closed for further assessments and repairs, which are expected to exceed $20,000.
469 exams scheduled in Wells Hall have been relocated. Police have not disclosed Tong’s educational status due to privacy laws, and the Department of Homeland Security has withheld his bail, unrelated to the ongoing investigation.
