A former lieutenant of the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office, Samuel Machado, faces murder charges in connection with a catastrophic fireworks warehouse explosion that killed seven workers in Esparto, California, last July. Machado is accused of storing 1 million pounds of illegal fireworks and using his law enforcement position to conceal these activities. The explosion, felt up to 20 miles away, destroyed property and sparked a 78-acre fire.
Alongside Machado, four other individuals associated with fireworks companies—Devastating Pyrotechnics LLC and Blackstar Fireworks—are also charged with murder. A thorough investigation by the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office led to 30 felony charges against seven people, with additional charges against Machado’s wife, Tammy.
An investigative report revealed that county officials had been aware of illegal operations at Machado’s property for at least three years but failed to act. The report criticized the lack of enforcement of a long-standing ordinance banning dangerous fireworks in rural Yolo County, which contributed to the disaster.
The defendants face a variety of charges, including establishing an unsafe workplace and illegal possession of explosives. The investigation has involved numerous law enforcement agencies across the state and beyond. Victims’ families have filed a $35 million lawsuit against the county and state for negligence.
