A recent study highlights the significant environmental impact of data centers powering artificial intelligence (AI), particularly their role in creating “heat islands” that can raise surrounding land temperatures by as much as 16 degrees Fahrenheit, affecting over 340 million people. Conducted by Andrea Marinoni and colleagues, the research analyzed temperature data from the past 20 years in relation to over 6,000 data centers located away from urban areas. They found an average temperature increase of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit post-operation, with extreme cases reaching up to 16.4 degrees.
The study identified that these temperature rises are consistent worldwide, notably in Mexico and Spain, impacting areas up to 10.9 miles away. Concerns are growing as AI data centers are expected to expand rapidly, exacerbating already rising global temperatures. Experts urge for more research and systemic thinking to mitigate these effects, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices in the face of increasing AI demands.
