The U.S. military has extensively used Tomahawk cruise missiles in various conflicts, particularly against Iran, with estimates suggesting over 850 have been launched—far exceeding the approximately 90 missiles the Pentagon acquires annually. The Pentagon’s current inventory is around 3,100 missiles, while a recent framework agreement with Raytheon aims to ramp up production to over 1,000 missiles annually.

Tomahawk missiles, launched primarily by the Navy, can strike targets over 1,000 miles away and are designed for precision. Costs range from $2.2 million per missile to over $4 million for systems that can target moving ships. Despite historical low production rates, efforts are underway to boost manufacturing capabilities, though challenges remain in scaling up amid increased usage.

Recent statements from military officials emphasize the need to strengthen the defense industrial base to expedite munitions production, indicating a commitment to rebuilding stockpiles.
