In a shocking turn of events at the Winter Olympics, Ilia Marin struggled in the men’s figure skating free skate, falling twice and finishing in eighth place. This performance marked a significant upset, allowing Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Shadorov to win gold with a personal best of 291.58 points, while Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama took silver and Shun Sato bronze.
Marin, a two-time world champion, had entered the competition with high expectations but succumbed to the intense pressure, stating, “I felt really good all day” yet felt “out of control” during the performance. After a strong short program where he led, he faltered in the free skate, only managing to successfully land a few of his jumps.
Shadorov, initially in sixth after the short program, delivered a flawless routine, landing five quadruples, which stunned both the audience and himself. Despite his successful performance, Marin was left to contemplate the unexpected outcome of the event.
