French prosecutors raided the offices of social media platform X as part of a preliminary investigation into allegations of child sexual abuse images and deepfakes. They subpoenaed billionaire owner Elon Musk for questioning, along with former CEO Linda Yaccarino and employees. This investigation was prompted by a report from a French lawmaker about biased algorithms on the platform, which may compromise data processing systems.
Concerns escalated after Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, was linked to posts denying the Holocaust and sharing explicit deepfakes, leading to inquiries from both the UK’s data privacy regulator and the EU. The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office is examining X’s handling of personal data, particularly regarding Grok’s potential generation of harmful images. Meanwhile, X criticized the raid as an abuse of law enforcement intended for political purposes. The investigation is ongoing, with Europol assisting French authorities.
