Ashley St. Clair, mother of one of Elon Musk’s children, has filed a lawsuit against Musk’s AI company, xAI, claiming it caused her emotional distress by allowing users of its AI tool, Grok, to create non-consensual deepfake images of sexually explicit poses. The lawsuit, initiated in New York and moved to the Southern District of New York at xAI’s request, follows widespread backlash against Grok for generating illegal deepfakes. St. Clair alleged that despite notifying xAI of these issues and requesting a prohibition on such images, the company continued to allow their creation and even retaliated by suspending her earnings on the platform.
xAI has countered with its own lawsuit in Texas, claiming St. Clair violated its terms of service and seeking over $75,000 in damages. The company stated any claims must be filed in specific Texas jurisdictions. In response, X has restricted some image generation features related to identifiable individuals in explicit clothing. Nevertheless, Grok has reportedly produced thousands of explicit images weekly, leading to global concerns and calls for regulatory action against the app.
St. Clair’s complaint argues that Grok’s design flaw allowed this misuse, constituting an extreme act unacceptable in society.
