On December 6, Ukraine faced a significant missile and drone attack by Russia targeting its energy infrastructure. The assault involved 653 attack drones, 36 cruise missiles, and 17 ballistic missiles, affecting 29 sites across the country. President Zelenskiy condemned the attacks, emphasizing the harm inflicted on civilians. Key damage occurred at substations and power generation facilities, severing a power line supplying the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.
The International Atomic Energy Agency noted that the plant lost external power for 30 minutes, marking the 11th such incident since the invasion began. Localities like Poltava, Lutsk, and Odessa reported explosions, and power outages were widespread in multiple regions. Casualties included at least eight injuries, particularly in Kyiv Oblast. Additional reports detailed civilian infrastructure damage, including fires in warehouses and residential areas.
The attack comes during ongoing U.S.-led negotiations, with concerns over the vulnerability of Ukraine’s energy system amid Russia’s sustained assaults.
