An officer from the Alhambra Police Department, Alec Sanders, is dead following a chase that ended in a crash early Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. when a suspect, identified as Steven Zapata, crashed a stolen Hyundai SUV into Sanders’ patrol car at Valley Boulevard and Edgewood Drive. The collision resulted in one death—a 33-year-old woman ejected from the vehicle—and two injuries, including Zapata, who faces charges of second-degree murder.
Officer Sanders, 28, had been with the department for about eight months and was remembered for his dedication and reliability. He was serving extra duty when the accident occurred. Following his death, a solemn procession escorted his body to the coroner’s office, marking a tragic day for the Alhambra community and bringing the total of law enforcement fatalities in Los Angeles County in 2025 to seven, the highest since 1994. The California Highway Patrol is assisting in the ongoing investigation into the crash.
