The Department of Transportation (DOT) launched a new “citizen campaign” aimed at promoting civility and courtesy among air travelers, coinciding with a record-breaking holiday travel season. Recommendations include dressing respectfully, assisting the elderly with luggage, keeping children under control, and expressing gratitude to flight attendants. This initiative addresses a rise in unruly behavior, with 2,096 incidents reported last year—more than double the number from 2019.
Although incidents had spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly due to mask mandate noncompliance, the overall count has decreased since then but remains above pre-pandemic levels. Incidents now include assaults on crew members and other passengers. In response, the FAA has adopted a “zero tolerance” policy, leading to significantly increased legal penalties for unruly behavior.
With over 6 million travelers expected this Thanksgiving and potential for long waits and delays, the DOT hopes this campaign will foster patience and reduce public disturbances. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized that travel can be pleasant if civility is upheld.
