After the devastating wildfires in January, which claimed around 20 lives and destroyed over 9,000 buildings in the Los Angeles area, the Walt Disney Company pledged $15 million for recovery efforts. CEO Bob Iger announced a $5 million initiative to rebuild Charles White Park in Altadena, which was damaged in the Eaton Fire. This park, named after a distinguished social realist artist, serves a historically majority Black community and is expected to reopen next year.
Iger emphasized Disney’s dedication to the community, as many of its staff, including 15 Imagineers, were personally affected by the fires. The rebuilding plan includes a complete playground, a community center, and an amphitheater for local residents, incorporating elements like Deodar cedar pine cones from the area.
Additionally, Disney is supporting local events, including a traditional Christmas celebration, and donating over 1,000 toys for a local toy drive. The company’s commitment extends to various organizations like the American Red Cross and the Los Angeles Area Food Bank to aid in recovery efforts across affected neighborhoods.
