A motorcyclist, 47-year-old Angelo Jose Saldívar, led police on a high-speed chase on Highway 210, reaching speeds of nearly 150 mph after allegedly shooting and killing San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nunez during a domestic violence call. The chase was broadcast live, and Saldívar evaded an officer before crashing into a gray Toyota Camry. The Camry’s driver, an off-duty narcotics officer, later collided with Saldívar. He was airlifted to a hospital in stable condition.
Deputy Nunez, a six-year veteran with a young daughter and pregnant wife, was killed in the incident. Law enforcement experts indicated that the off-duty deputy’s actions during the pursuit likely fell within legal boundaries, given the circumstances. They noted that using deadly force is justified against individuals posing imminent threats, such as Saldívar, who had already shot an officer. A sheriff’s spokesperson did not confirm if the department was investigating the use of force, but experts predicted it would align with policy due to the serious risk posed by Saldívar.
The community mourned Nunez’s death, with fellow officers gathering to honor him as his body was transported to the coroner’s office. Sheriff Shannon Dicas expressed the department’s sadness over the tragic event.
