This week, Boston will experience exceptionally high tides, known as King Tides, peaking on Thursday at 2:30 PM, with levels expected to reach up to 11.8 feet. King Tides occur when the Earth, Moon, and Sun are aligned, particularly during the Moon’s closest approach to Earth, a phenomenon known as perigee. These tides can cause coastal flooding and erosion, especially in light of rising sea levels due to climate change.
Experts highlight that while King Tides are a natural occurrence, climate change is intensifying their impact. Boston has already seen sea levels rise by nearly a foot since the Industrial Revolution, leading to increased flooding risks. Future King Tides are anticipated on October 8-10, November 5-7, and December 3. By 2050, Boston might experience 50-70 days of flooding each year, compared to the current 10-20 days.
Despite the risks, these events also offer unique experiences, transforming the waterfront into a vibrant scene. Educational initiatives aim to raise awareness of both the beauty and dangers of King Tides.
