A recent CBS News poll reveals that most Americans view democracy as the nation’s greatest gift to the world, ahead of the upcoming 250th anniversary. Approximately 16% of respondents believe democracy is America’s top invention, followed closely by light bulbs (14%) and the Internet (10%).
In terms of iconic American foods, hamburgers topped the list, with 33% of survey participants choosing it as the most representative dish, despite debates over its origins. Barbecue and apple pie followed, at 25% and 19%, respectively. Interestingly, while apple pie is often associated with America, its roots trace back to English recipes. The poll indicates that many Americans are not particularly enthusiastic about the upcoming anniversary, with 47% expressing low excitement and 52% stating they won’t display the American flag on July 4th.
