Miami-Dade County has requested federal permission to replace its Proterra electric bus fleet, which cost nearly $62 million but has faced significant reliability issues. A report indicated that the county terminated its contract with Phoenix Motor Co. due to unmet warranty and service obligations. Out of the 69 buses purchased, around 60 are out of service, prompting the county to petition the Federal Transit Administration for an exemption from the mandated 12-year service life before replacing the vehicles.
The county’s efforts to resolve the issue include pursuing legal remedies and evaluating whether components from non-operational buses can be salvaged. Other jurisdictions, such as Broward County, are experiencing similar problems with their Proterra fleets. Miami-Dade’s Mayor expressed hope for renovations to return some buses to service while officials explore replacement options. The future of the fleet remains uncertain as the county seeks to address ongoing challenges.
