The Dallas Mavericks have announced they are parting ways with head coach Jason Kidd, bringing his five-year tenure to an end. Kidd was hired in 2021 to lead a team centered around Luka Doncic, achieving a successful first season with a 52-30 record and a surprise run to the Western Conference Finals. However, the team’s fortunes declined sharply after trading Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025, a move criticized by minority owner Mark Cuban, who suggested Kidd had more involvement in the decision than he disclosed.
Following the trade, the Mavericks faced significant injury setbacks, losing key players like Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving, leading to a dismal finish with 30 losses out of their final 37 games. After their last regular-season game, Kidd noted the continued injuries made evaluation difficult, asserting the hope for better health in the upcoming season.
Kidd was reportedly interested in a front office role, but the Mavericks opted for a new direction under new chairman Masai Ujiri, who emphasized the need for a thorough review of the team. Despite an earlier contract extension for Kidd after interest from the New York Knicks, the Mavericks felt it was time to find a new head coach.
Kidd leaves with a record of 205 wins and 205 losses, and now the Mavericks must search for a coach while building their roster around emerging star Cooper Flagg amidst the backdrop of such significant changes.
