A new UK-Kazakh initiative will send 15 university students to the Tien Shan mountains for glaciological research this July and August, addressing the urgent issue of retreating glaciers essential for Kazakhstan’s water security. Launched by the British Kazakh Association in collaboration with Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the program combines fieldwork with leadership training.
Participants will collaborate with Kazakh and international experts, utilizing automatic sensors at weather stations and conducting data analysis to aid climate adaptation and water management. A significant aspect of the expedition includes a 100km climb organized with the Kaz Alpine Club.
The initiative, announced by BKS President Rupert Goodman in the House of Lords, has garnered support from prominent figures, including Kazakh officials and the Prince of Wales. British explorers Rosie Stancer and John Blashford Snell will contribute as experts.
Applications are open for undergraduate and graduate students from Kazakhstan, requiring a resume and a motivational video or written submission. This program aims to enhance research on the Tien Shan Glacier and bolster Kazakhstan’s water security amidst climate change challenges.
