Drivers for Transdev, which operates paratransit and minibus services in San Diego, went on strike this week over unfair labor practices, causing disruptions for passengers relying on the ACCESS program. Teamsters Local 542 represents the drivers and cites long breaks—up to 15 hours—between shifts as a key issue.
Union representative Salvador Africa emphasized the need for job respect and recognition, while some riders, like Rosemary Teter, who typically takes the ACCESS bus to work, expressed support for the drivers’ demands. However, not all passengers agreed, with one criticizing the strike for impacting those in need of transportation.
Negotiations between the union and Transdev have been ongoing since December, with the previous contract expiring on March 30. Transdev claims to have made several wage proposals, offering pay increases of 16% to 21% over three years, but the union has recently clarified its economic demands only. Both parties remain in discussions, with hopes for a new agreement that could allow services to resume by Monday.
