Haines is considering a partnership with Global Ports Holdings, which could significantly increase cruise ship passenger numbers at Port Chilkoot Dock. The Turkish-owned company, which manages 35 cruise ports globally, aims to lease the dock, which would be Alaska’s first long-term lease of its kind. Borough Administrator Alecca Fullerton mentioned that more details would emerge after a town hall meeting.
Global Ports Holdings’ Colin Murphy stated that the initial goal could be to welcome up to 300,000 passengers within five years, a substantial rise from this year’s expected 67,000. While reaching this target is ambitious due to limitations in dock capacity and season length, Murphy believes there’s potential for growth. Infrastructure improvements and better local tours will be needed to manage the increased foot traffic, especially in popular areas like the Chilkoot River.
Tourism Director Reba Hilton highlighted the challenges of sustainable tourism in Haines, noting that fluctuating passenger numbers complicate staffing and profitability. A significant boost in arrivals, like 300,000 passengers, might equate to a large cruise ship visiting nearly every day. Murphy acknowledged community concerns about rapid growth but sees the potential for economic development and expressed a desire for collaboration. The final scope of the lease will depend on community input, with a town hall meeting scheduled for Thursday to discuss these issues further.
