General Motors (GM) has laid off over 600 employees, representing more than 10% of its IT department, as part of a strategic shift towards integrating AI-focused skills. The layoffs were confirmed by GM and are intended to align the workforce with future technology needs, as the company seeks expertise in AI development, data engineering, and cloud-based solutions.
These job cuts are not permanent, as GM is actively hiring for IT roles that require different skill sets, particularly those related to AI architecture and development. The restructuring reflects GM’s broader effort to prioritize AI initiatives within its business strategy, which has included previous layoffs in software roles.
The IT overhaul is spearheaded by Sterling Anderson, GM’s new chief product officer, who aims to consolidate technology operations. Notable recent hires include Behrad Toghi and Rashed Haq, both with experience in AI and autonomous vehicles.
