In February, a toddler in suburban Phoenix was initially declared dead after being found in a pool, but hours later was discovered breathing in a hospital morgue. Police records reveal that two officers observed possible signs of life before the child was moved to a “cold room” at the hospital. Following CPR and other interventions, the boy was transported to another hospital and ultimately survived.
Authorities recommend negligence charges against the parents, citing a strong odor of marijuana in the home and unsecured access to the pool. The incident began when relatives called 911, reporting the child’s drowning. Mercy Gilbert Medical Center has stated it is reviewing the care provided.
The child’s attorney noted that there are more details to understand about the case. While erroneous death declarations are rare, they can occur, particularly if breathing is shallow. Expert opinions suggest that this may involve a failure in policy or the experience of medical staff. A GoFundMe page has been set up for the child’s ongoing medical treatment.
