To create more cap space for Kuminga, the Lakers could reduce or waive Jared Vanderbilt’s $12.4 million contract, potentially freeing up $7.3 million more in addition to the existing $1.9 million, totaling about $9.2 million in cap space. This could make room for an $18.8 million offer to Kuminga.
The Lakers are also considering moving Dalton Knecht or Jaden Hardy to further generate cap space, as they have limited tradeable draft picks. They need to weigh the value of signing Kuminga against the potential loss of a future first-rounder. Ultimately, while they have a pathway to offer competitive contracts, exceeding $20 million for free agents seems unlikely without significant roster adjustments.
