On July 8, Reuters reported that Russia has deployed an electronic warfare system, Volna Kupol Galant, which disrupts Starlink connections critical for operating Ukrainian drones. This development poses a significant threat to Ukraine’s medium-range offensive operations against Russian supply lines, especially in occupied Crimea. Military analysts believe that the system, which can destabilize approximately 20 square kilometers of Starlink coverage, may hinder Ukraine’s ability to conduct drone operations.
Ukrainian defense officials indicated that they had located about ten of these systems, which are manufactured by a company based in Simferopol. The jammers are said to consume high power and can be mounted on trailers. Their effectiveness will depend on how quickly Russia can deploy them along the front lines and how quickly Ukraine can identify and neutralize them.
Despite these challenges, Ukrainian forces are already targeting these jammers. Reports from military personnel highlighted that units have successfully destroyed two Russian jamming systems, allowing some Ukrainian drones to operate without disruption after the attacks. Military experts suggest that the increased use of electronic warfare by Russia could complicate Ukraine’s medium-range strike operations.
