Eileen Wang, Arcadia’s city leader, resigned after reaching a plea deal related to charges of being an illegal foreign agent for China. A former mayor, she admitted to promoting Chinese government propaganda through a website she ran with her ex-fiancée, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, from 2020 to 2022. Wang’s activities included disseminating pro-China messages and altering articles based on directives from Chinese officials.
She appeared in federal court, where she was granted bail of $25,000 and ordered to forfeit her passport. The maximum penalty for her actions is ten years in prison. While Wang’s lawyers claimed that her behavior involved her personal life and not her role as an elected official, U.S. authorities expressed concern over foreign influence on local governance.
Wang and Sun, who previously managed her campaign, were under scrutiny for their ties to the Chinese government. After her resignation, Arcadia’s officials assured the community of ongoing investigations to address the serious allegations of foreign interference. Wang expressed remorse and sought public understanding as the city began seeking a new mayor.
