The U.S. military has confirmed the recovery of Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr.’s body, one of two service members who went missing off Morocco’s southern coast during a hiking incident. The soldiers were part of the annual African Lion exercise but the circumstances of their disappearance are not linked to the exercise itself.
Key, a 27-year-old air defense artillery officer from Richmond, Virginia, was found after a search involving over 1,000 personnel. The second missing soldier’s identity remains unreleased, and the search continues for him.
Key’s body was discovered near the coastline around 8:55 a.m. local time on Saturday, approximately one mile from where he fell into the ocean. Details reveal that he may have either fallen in or jumped in to rescue another soldier who could not swim.
Key is remembered by his superiors as a selfless leader and is survived by his family. Plans are underway for his repatriation to the U.S. He had served since 2023 and earned accolades including the Army Achievement Medal.
