Berry has been on the run since early Friday, and a warrant has been issued for him on charges of attempted second-degree murder. The investigation is complicated by his military background, which gives him survival skills. He is believed to be armed with at least one handgun and has potential access to extra ammunition.
The search efforts are made difficult by rugged terrain, with a trail camera capturing an image of Berry in camouflage. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that he might have received outside help. Nearby Stewart County Middle School has implemented a “soft lockdown” as a precaution, although officials state there was no direct threat to the school.
