The Heartland Flyer, Amtrak’s daily rail service between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth, is facing an uncertain future after the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) cut its funding. TxDOT announced it lacks the $2.5 million needed for ongoing support, with current funds lasting only until the end of the year. Peter Lukodi, president of Texas Railroad Advocates, stressed the importance of the train as the only direct ground transportation option between the two cities.
In the past, when funding was threatened, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) provided financial aid. NCTCOG has stated it will consider additional funding. Rail advocates are actively seeking solutions and have engaged with key officials in Austin to secure future funding as Congress reconvenes next year.
Amtrak is currently working with state officials and has not announced any service cancellations. Meanwhile, Oklahoma residents are encouraged to continue booking trips on the Heartland Flyer, with plans in place to explore partnership opportunities to keep the service operational.
