BYU and Utah State had strong showings at the Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship in Hutchinson, Kansas, with BYU freshman Kihei Akina finishing second at 8 under par and Utah State’s Sergio Jimenez placing third at 7 under. This effort placed BYU and Utah in the top half of the team standings, with BYU tying for seventh and Utah finishing sixth.
Oklahoma State won the championship, achieving a 10-under total and marking their 13th team title, while junior Preston Stout claimed his third individual title at 11 under par, three strokes ahead of Akina.
BYU coach Bruce Brockbank praised the challenging conditions at Prairie Dunes, noting their team’s solid performance despite difficult weather. Akina expressed his positive experience despite falling short of victory, while Jimenez made history with a tied tournament record of 7-under 63 during the second round.
BYU started strong but fell to seventh after the final round, while Utah State moved up to sixth. Individual performance for BYU was limited, with no other players in the top 20. Both teams now await NCAA regional results on May 6, with matches scheduled from May 18-20.
