Pope Leo XIV marked his first Good Friday by carrying a wooden cross to all 14 stations of the Way of the Cross at the Colosseum, a return to a tradition not seen in decades. He emphasized the significance of his role as a spiritual leader, expressing that he carries the suffering of the world in prayer. The ceremony included a torch-lit procession attended by around 30,000 believers, during which a meditation was presented, reflecting on the responsibilities of those in power.
Among the attendees was Sister Perenatita Chieoma Finau, who expressed joy at participating in this significant event. Unlike his predecessors, Leo is notably fit and active at 70, prepared for leading Easter celebrations, including baptizing new Catholics and delivering his Easter message from St. Peter’s Square. The Way of the Cross is intended to remind participants that faith must be expressed in real-world actions, highlighting themes of violence and reconciliation.
